Caroline Zilinsky

Caroline Zilinsky

The Hooligan 71×71cm oil on linen

Finalist 2017 Kilgore Prize, Newcastle Regional Gallery

This is a portrait of violent criminal Robert Foley who spent over twenty-six years in prison and was acquitted of two life sentences, one in Thailand and the other in Italy. While in Thailand Foley wrote a book of poetry which was published and held to great acclaim. Age has softened this hardened man who now leads a quiet life of solitude and service to others. In this painting he reclines on his purple chaise lounge in his custom made black swimming stockings

Australian born artist Caroline Zilinsky is an obsessive and reclusive painter. Her work explores the grotesque, absurd and tragic aspects of human nature through narrative imagery, and has been painting social and political work for several decades

She has exhibited nationally and internationally and has had works in major prizes including the Sulman Prize (AGNSW), Portia Geach Memorial Portrait Prize (S.H.Irvin Gallery), Kilgour Prize (Newcastle Art Gallery), Rick Amor Self-Portrait Prize and Muswelbrook Regional Art Prize to name a few
