Statement on Australian Still Life
Marian Drew 2006

Through the tradition of the still life genre I hope to explore contemporary human relationships to the wild life that cohabit our living environments. The remote and idealist view of the wild life photographer is replaced with a domestic and intimate view of the dining table.

In the course of daily life the animals in these photographs have been killed by cars, domestic pets or power lines and have been found beside roads and in our suburbs. The death of these animals is inevitably a result of our urban growth and increasing consumption.

The photographic process offers us the opportunity to examine closely, and to therefore acknowledge and increase awareness and understanding of these co-inhabitants of urban life. Framed as they are by our own domestic rituals their death is abruptly brought into the relevance of our everyday life.
