Malcolm Harding April 22 - May 17, 2006
Artist StatementNature, and its depiction through art and science, is the focus of both my realistic and abstract paintings. The flower images, loosely based on native and exotic plants, use multiple layers and glazes of oil paint. These works suggest they may be sections from much larger paintings and their blurred backgrounds imply the field of focus created by the camera lens.
The abstract works substitute the camera lens for the microscope and telescope, exploring the similarities between macroscopic and the microscopic visions of nature. The disparate elements suggest cells, amoeba, planets or stars. These elements float on the canvasses, alluding to life under a glass slide or the infinity of outer space. A finely etched grid is used to give the paintings a sense of scientific credibility.
