Peter Pinson
Paris and Parramatta 1-26 March, 2008 Opening Night Tuesday 4 March, 6-8pm
PETER PINSON - A COMMENTARY Pinson's recent paintings deal with the strangeness of the relationships between objects. Curious flowering plants and other still life items seem to be engaged in enigmatic rituals, mutual interrogations, or courtships.
There are no human presences. Pinson's light-flooded universe is a domain of things. There is stillness in these pictures, but it is a brittle stillness. As Col Jordan once observed, "a vestige of menace threatens the apparent calm".
A river usually flows in the background, oblivious to the poise or the querulousness of the objects in the foreground. This river-image derived from the view of the Seine that Pinson enjoyed from his studio in the Cité International des Arts in 2005.
The exhibition also includes some paintings which Pinson completed in Paris in 2003. These explore the theme of the utensils and décor patterning of famous Paris cafés.
Pinson is also interested in art deco posters, and something of this genre's flatness, sonorous colour and exaggerated perspectives is reflected in the recent paintings.
In 1982, Col Jordan wrote of the paintings Peter Pinson suggest that "nothing is really what it seems and that paradox is the only reality". Emeritus Professor Jordan's comment continues to hold true for much of the work in this exhibition.
'The artist would like to thank Michel Brouet for the photography'
