Maryanne Wick - Artist's
Statement
A grey-robed monk talking on a mobile,
the smell of kimchi, glamorous parking hostesses, miles of black-haired
heads, Seoulites, huge sun-visors, Old Man Park, young soldiers
on guard duty, protestors and lunch deliveries, market-life,
street workers pulling over-loaded carts, a pair of nuns jogging,
foreigners being scrutinised, young people holding hands, businessmen
chewing on tooth-picks, same-same, snow and fur coats, mobile
phones, riot buses covered in chicken-wire, white surgical masks,
an old bent lady, chauffeurs driving black limousines, temple
life, a woman wearing a hanbok, school children, babies on backs,
political unrest, concrete, heads wearing hats, a submissive
daughter-in-law, Burberry check, a hospital patient taking his
drip for a walk, 'Be The Reds' T-shirts, wigged sales promotion
girls, riot police, a girl admiring her reflection, the shoe
repairman, yogurt lady and fortune teller, an ajuma carrying
a food tray on her head, orange soju tents, Confucianism and
bittersweet memories of Korea.
