Thrídrangaviti and the Midnight Sun 2026 41×26cm acrylic on primed calico, cotton thread, hand stitch

Thrídrangaviti Lighthouse, located off the southwest coast of Iceland, is one of the world’s most isolated lighthouses. Perched atop a remote sea stack 36.5 metres (120 feet) above the ocean, the active lighthouse was constructed between 1938 and 1939 under the direction of engineer Árni Þórarinsson.

Building the lighthouse required extraordinary determination and ingenuity. Skilled climbers from the Westman Islands established access to the sea stack by drilling metal spikes into the rock face and linking them with chains to create a climbing route. Near the summit, where no natural handholds existed, they formed a three-person human ladder to reach the top.

The hand stitching throughout my work echoes the painstaking, entirely manual construction of the lighthouse. Each stitch references the labour, endurance, and precision required to build such a remarkable structure by hand in an extreme and isolated environment.
The work is also connected to my experience of the midnight sun, a phenomenon I witnessed during the same year that I encountered Thrídrangaviti.
