Stephen’s celebrated body of work spans ceramics, drawing, works on paper and painting, with clay central to his practice. Based in Naarm/Melbourne, he has exhibited nationally and internationally since the 1970’s. However, it is a rarer treat to see his work in Sydney. His attention to the ceramic surface reveals a level of fascination which bridges the technical investigations of the studio potter with conceptual and painterly concerns. His hand-built vessels, layered with color and marked by the expressive gestures of the artist’s hand, imbue his vases with a vitality that reflects a fundamental impulse to create. Through his career, Stephen Benwell has approached ceramics as a field to be expanded, taking the conventions of the craft to redefine how ceramic objects can operate within contemporary art
